Proposed Government Takeover of Dietary
Supplements! (Again!)
I know you
guys are busy and stressed with day to day living, but this is very important
and we have to stop this bill! If you don't have the time right now, then
save this and get involved when you can, but don't wait too long, it may be too
late. The following was faxed to HHA today from one of the larger
distributors of natural health products in the U.S. They supply thousands of health
food stores and I will tell you this, if they say this is bad, then it is!

This Bill Would Repeal

Bill will limit which supplements you can buy, while substantially restricting
the number of acceptable ingredients. The misleadingly named Dietary Supplement
Safety Act (DSSA) was introduced with the good intention of stamping out illegal/mislabeled
sports supplements, but governing agencies already have ample authority to enforce
laws and ensure product purity and safety. Should this Bill pass, the federal
government will take over the dietary supplement industry to harmonize the U.S.
with highly restrictive CODEX rules, Canadian and European regulations, getting
new veto power over both existing ingredients and every new product! Let the FDA
and DEA enforce the strong federal regulations that are already in place.
Your
right to purchase dietary supplements is under attack! Senate Bill S.3002—the
Dietary Supplement Safety Act (DSSA will drastically change the way you
purchase and use dietary supplements. In order to defeat this unjust Bill, health

Senator John McCain has introduced a bill that
if passed, will drive up the cost of dietary supplements and restrict your access
to them. The bill being spearheaded by Senators John McCain and Byron Dorgan supposedly
originates from the controversy surrounding the use of steroids by Major League
Baseball players. Since some unethical companies illegally sold steroid drugs
as “dietary supplements,” certain members of Senate appear to have been deceived
into believing that the FDA needs to be given additional power to ban dietary
supplements across the board.
In order to mislead the
public about the true nature of this bill, it has been named the Dietary Supplement
Safety Act of 2010 (DSSA). Despite nutritional supplements’ safety record, McCain’s
bill would give the FDA authority to draw up a list of allowed and disallowed
supplements (and supplement potencies). This bill would cause any dietary supplement
to be classified as “adulterated” if it is “manufactured, packaged, held, distributed,
labeled or licensed by a dietary supplement company not registered with the Secretary.”
The “Secretary” in this case is the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the
department of the federal government that oversees the FDA.

host of major sporting bodies including the National Football League (NFL) and
Major League Baseball (MLB) have thrown their weight behind the Bill after Senator
McCain said one of the motivations for introducing it was to combat contamination
of sports supplements.
